Permanent Training contracts

Permanent training contracts expose you to everything we do for our clients on a compliance level from day one. We provide a thorough induction programme with plenty of 121 training and support and you start to build the experience that will provide you with the foundations of your career in accounting.

Our team is trained in all aspects of the accounting function, providing a thorough and robust understanding of their role, whilst nurturing interest and talent in specialist areas.

About us

Elsby & Co is a forward thinking and commercial firm of Chartered Accountants with offices in Northampton and Rushden. Due to current growth and further expansion plans we have the need to recruit a Semi-Senior into the team. As a company we offer outstanding practical and theoretical training, either ACA or ACCA with an excellent study support package.

The Role

As a Semi-Senior accountant at Elsby & Co we would expect you to be moving away from task- based work to on-going client management throughout the year. Managing your own work-load and taking responsibility for developing relationships with clients, as well as developing your technical and commercial skills. We want to prepare you for becoming a Senior Accountant, Client Manager and perhaps onto Partnership. All very real opportunities with us.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of accounts and related taxation work for a wide variety of clients using Iris, including Limited Companies, Sole Traders and Partnerships, ready for partner / senior review
  • Clearance of queries with client prior to review
  • Process final accounts adjustments subsequent to review
  • Submission of accounts and tax returns to HMRC once approved by client
  • Contact clients requesting books and records, in order for work to commence
  • Liaison with outsourcing company regarding submission and return of jobs
  • Completion of periodic client bookkeeping and VAT returns
  • Sundry conversations with HMRC regarding client matters, including chasing tax repayments

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Between two and five years’ experience working in an Accountancy Practice preparing accounts and tax computations
  • Ability to pick up procedures and processes quickly
  • AAT qualified or ACCA/ACA studier
  • IT literate, including use of computerised systems, preferably Iris, Sage and Excel
  • Numerate, thorough and attention to detail
  • A sense of humour
  • Good communication skills, both with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to work using own initiative with little supervision, showing good organisational skills
  • Ability to manage and plan workload, and prioritise
  • Positive and friendly ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Driving Licence and car owner

The Role

As Senior Accountant we would expect the following experience and expertise:

  • Responsible for all compliance aspects for clients
  • Responsible for managing workflow
  • Managing the day to day client relationship
  • Handling day to day queries efficiently
  • Responsible for training of junior staff, including appraisal of work
  • Managing clients on a commercially successful basis
  • Responsible for the efficient functioning of compliance work in general
  • Developing abilities in more complex areas of tax & other client matters
  • Responsibility for the achievement of work within budget, able to discuss fees with clients
  • Able to communicate effectively with Partners & juniors as appropriate
  • Able to problem solve and find quick solutions to problems
  • Managing own / junior staff workflow & client work
  • Achievement of chargeability and recoverability targets
  • Achieve a level of technical knowledge commensurate with the position
  • Demonstrate good commercial skills in negotiating fees with clients and in decision making on jobs
  • Working with other seniors as a team to improve the practice generally and to pass on 'the Elsby way' to other staff
  • Taking responsibility for the ongoing management of clients, workflow, supervision, training, the compliance function
  • Audit for a variety of clients - overseeing the audits and helping junior team members

The Person

Elsby & Co have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Bookkeeper to join the team in our Sywell office. This is a great opportunity for a commercial professional looking for a progressive full-time role in an ambitious and growing firm.

Main Duties and Responsibilities - Client Bookkeeping

You will be required to provide on and off-site bookkeeping for a range of businesses, with an in-depth knowledge of the accounts function being essential. The ideal candidate will be keen to embrace the digital future and be proficient in Xero, Sage along with other platforms, although system training will be given.


The successful candidate will be able to provide a complete bookkeeping service to clients or supplement tasks they already do themselves, whilst ensuring that client records are accurate and simplified for business advising purposes.

You will have a thorough understanding of accruals, stock, VAT, fixed asset record keeping, depreciation, accounting for loans, HP interest and wages control accounts and be able to resolve queries and issues, as they arise and reconcile balance sheet balances.

We are keen to grow this department and therefore you will be able to supervise and develop a small team of bookkeepers.

Skills Required:

  • Organised and efficient, used to working to budgets
  • Self- motivated and able to set up and work independently on bookkeeping tasks
  • IT literate, including use of computerised bookkeeping platforms – ideally Sage & Xero, Quickbooks, FreeAgent
  • Strong internal and external communication skills ie confident and professional communications with clients and working with all levels of staff internally to ensure an efficient and quality service
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Driving Licence and Car Owner
