We are currently recruiting for the following positions:

Elsby & Co are a growing firm of Chartered Accountants and we currently require an experienced payroll assistant to work from our Rushden office on a full-time basis.

You must be experienced dealing with all aspects of running payroll, including SMP, SSP, Auto Enrolment, NEST & pension contributions.

We use Sage line 50 for payroll, so experience with working with this is essential.

As a firm of accountants, we carry out payroll duties for a number of clients, so you must be able to work on multiple payrolls and work well to deadlines.

You must be efficient and hard-working, flexible and able to adapt to different clients.

The Role

As a manager for the business you will be completing the below duties as a matter of course – however a key element of the role is your ability to further develop the business.

We want a commercially minded ‘go-getter’ that is excited by the opportunity to progress, with route to partnership a very real option for the right person.

Duties & Responsibilites:

  • Responsible for all compliance aspects for own portfolio of clients
  • Responsible for managing workflow
  • Managing the day to day client relationships
  • Handling day to day queries efficiently
  • Responsible for training of junior staff, including appraisal of work
  • Managing clients on a commercially successful basis
  • Responsible for the efficient functioning of compliance work in general
  • Developing abilities in more complex areas of tax & other client matters
  • Responsibility for the achievement of work within budget, able to discuss fees with clients
  • Able to communicate effectively with Partners & juniors as appropriate
  • Able to problem solve and find quick solutions to problems
  • Managing own / junior staff workflow & client work
  • Achievement of chargeability and recoverability targets
  • Achieve a level of technical knowledge commensurate with the position
  • Demonstrate good commercial skills in negotiating fees with clients and in decision making on jobs
  • Working with other seniors as a team to improve the practice generally and to pass on ‘the Elsby way’ to other staff
  • Taking responsibility for the ongoing management of clients, workflow, supervision, training, the compliance function


  • Qualified ACA or ACCA with at least 5 years PQE
  • Experience as a manager in a firm of accountants looking after a portfolio of clients
  • Experience of building new and existing client relationships

The Role

As a Semi-Senior accountant at Elsby & Co we would expect you to be moving away from task- based work to on-going client management throughout the year. Managing your own work-load and taking responsibility for developing relationships with clients, as well as developing your technical and commercial skills. We want to prepare you for becoming a Senior Accountant, Client Manager and perhaps onto Partnership. All very real opportunities with us.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of accounts and related taxation work for a wide variety of clients using Iris, including Limited Companies, Sole Traders and Partnerships, ready for partner / senior review
  • Clearance of queries with client prior to review
  • Process final accounts adjustments subsequent to review
  • Submission of accounts and tax returns to HMRC once approved by client
  • Contact clients requesting books and records, in order for work to commence
  • Liaison with outsourcing company regarding submission and return of jobs
  • Completion of periodic client bookkeeping and VAT returns
  • Sundry conversations with HMRC regarding client matters, including chasing tax repayments

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Between two and five years’ experience working in an Accountancy Practice preparing accounts and tax computations
  • Ability to pick up procedures and processes quickly
  • AAT qualified or ACCA/ACA studier
  • IT literate, including use of computerised systems, preferably Iris, Sage and Excel
  • Numerate, thorough and attention to detail
  • A sense of humour
  • Good communication skills, both with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to work using own initiative with little supervision, showing good organisational skills
  • Ability to manage and plan workload, and prioritise
  • Positive and friendly ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Driving Licence and car owner
